Tanudan teachers train on combative sports officiating and coaching

Tanudan, Kalinga – Following the introduction of martial arts to the youth in Tanudan last year, teachers in the locality underwent training on combative sports coaching and officiating on January 13-15, 2023 at the Biga National High School.

The event was sponsored by the Local Government Unit of Tanudan under the leadership of Mayor Jaedicke Rhoss Dagadag.

With the youth responding well to combative sports, it will now be played during intramurals and district meets in the municipality. This is part of the selection of martial artists who will be finally representing Tanudan in the provincial and CARAA meet.

For this reason, Martial Arts Instructor and Coach Daniel Gumilao relayed there is a need to educate the teachers in Tanudan on the rules and regulations of the different combative sports disciplines such as pencak silat and arnis. This is to prepare them for officiating the game and for coaching their respective athletes.

During the 3-day seminar, the participants were as well taught about the basics of the sport. Likewise, the kids had sparring and the teachers were tasked to officiate and judge the matches.

“Tapnu masanay da nga ag-officiate iti combative sports, kasla iti agreferee ken agjudge wennu scoring tapos umuna ket kailangan nga adda ammu bassit iti martial arts,” he said.

As recalled, it was June 2022 when Dagadag initiated the training of the youth in martial arts through Coach Gumilao. The latter has been tirelessly going around Tanudan to reach the youth and train them since then.

On November 29 – December 3 last year, 15 young athletes in Tanudan collected a total of 4 gold medals, 6 silver, and 5 bronze during the 4th Muay Thai National Championships in Zambales.
