Tinglayan denounces rebel recruitment; 3 recruits returned

Tinglayan, Kalinga – Following the recruitment of five individuals in Basao last November, the elders, constituents, and barangay officials in a resolution denounced the Communist Front Organizations and their act of recruiting the youth to join the New People’s Army.


It was in November when five men, ages between 21 to 30 were recruited by the Communist Party of the Philippines – New People’s Army (CPP-NPA). Moreover, two of these individuals are the breadwinners of their family since they no longer have their fathers.


In the resolution crafted, the constituents in the said barangay do not welcome organizations affiliated with the Communist Party of the Philippines.


Mayor Sacrament Gumilab with the Philippine National Police – Kalinga, parents of the 5 individuals who were that time have no idea about the incident, and barangay officials of Basao gathered to discuss how they were going to bring these people back.


As noted by Gumilab, they agreed that Basao would look for their people and that the barangay would send a strong message that the left-leaning groups are not welcome in their barangay.

Meanwhile, according to Kalinga Police Provincial Director PCol. Davy Vicente Limmong, it was said that 3 of the 5 have already returned.


Further, when asked about the status of rebel recruitment in the province, he said that there are still those leftist who entice people to join them in the mountains for their armed struggle.


“Conconvince en da dagituy tattao nga usually dagitoy tattao ket no read no write, almost ken awan unay exposure da idjay ruwar. Isu nga I-tetake advantage da,” he said.


The province of Kalinga is still experiencing the presence and recruitment of NPAs although there have been scores of rebels who have surrendered. Recenlty five former NPA rebels received their livelihood cheque from the Social Welafare and Development – Kalinga Office.
