Tinglayan expected to produce more processed peanuts with SAAD grant

Tinglayan, Kalinga – Processing peanut products will now be easier and faster for two farmer associations in the municipality with the peanut roasting machine given by the Department of Agriculture - Special Area for Agricultural Development.

The two farmer organizations each received two sets of equipment. Each set costs P34,500, amounting to P138,000 in total.

Tinglayan Municipal Officer Larae Lactao informed that the DA together with the Municipal Local Government Unit of Tinglayan headed by Mayor Sacrament Gumilab turned over 2 peanut roasters each to Barangay Ambato-Legleg Indigenous Group Irrigators Association (BALIGI-A) and UFI Farmers Organization of Barangay Mallango this February 17.

Larae mentioned that the machines were given to the associations in order to help them process their peanut products faster to facilitate mass production.

Roasting peanuts manually, according to Lactao, is time consuming, and it requires a lot of effort. With the roasting machine, the process reduce hours and effort as the peanut roaster work on 4-5 kilograms of peanuts per batch in 45 minutes to an hour.

“Time consuming ken [it requires] hard work talaga ti panag-roast karkaru nu manu-mano tapos narigat pay matantiya diay luto tapnu even kuma diay pagkaluto na. Diay panag-usar idiay machine, i-monitor mo lang diay heat na ken roasting time and then the machine does the rest. Kaya mas madali na lang siya,” she said.

Larae added that apart from roasting peanut, the machine can also process other seeds and beans such as coffee.

Meanwhile, the two associations already underwent their farmer field school last year wherein and trained to process their crops into a finished product like peanut butter.
