Tabuk City, Kalinga – Sterner measures have been proposed to ensure that motorists get to obey traffic laws to reduce road accidents in the Province of Kalinga.

According to Moises Baysa, the Provincial Chairman of the Full Spectrum Riders Association of the Philippines or FSRAP-Kalinga Chapter, there should be an increase in traffic fines for drivers to behave better while on the road.

He suggested this during a phone interview with Station 1 Radio aired on Monday, May 30, 2022.

The FSRAP is a partner of the Philippine National Police and the Highway Patrol Group, which consists of riders and advocates who train and educate drivers.

Baysa said motorists are aware of the benefits of obeying the rules and wearing safety gears, but they tend to violate the law, as the existing P50 to P150 penalties, for them, are affordable.

“Sa akin, mas maganda rin sigurong itaas ang penalty ng mga (violators) dito kasi mga P150 lang yata sa LGUs natin, sa others, P50 lang ang violation or yung ticket nila so mas matakot sila pag gawin nating P1,000 o P1,500. Let’s just be honest, realtalk, ang mga taga-Kalinga, mayayaman mga yan eh,” stated Baysa.

Safety tips for motorists

The Provincial Chairman of FSRAP-Kalinga further provided safety tips for drivers to achieve the ultimate goal, which is to make sure they arrive home safely.

Baysa stressed that before hitting the road, drivers or motorists should first check the overall condition of the vehicle, especially its signal lights, headlights, engine, and possible oil leaks.

Also, motorists should learn to be ‘defensive drivers.’ Being a defensive driver, he said, reduces the dangers associated with driving by avoiding visual and physical distractions, and mainly focusing on the road.

“Avoid natin yung sa visual distractions tulad ‘pag may nakikita tayo sa kalsada… and physical distractions tulad ng mga cellphones, pag-answer ng calls o pag-text habang nagda-drive. Yun po yung iwasan natin and then obey always yung traffic rules and regulations, which is nasa Republic Act 4136,” added Baysa.

Further, he warned motorists to ‘never drink when driving’ to avoid the risks of causing accidents.

FSRAP-Kalinga, willing for road safety seminar

The association expressed its willingness to partner with the local government units for the conduct of road safety seminars.
