2 boys who went river-swimming drown in Abulug, Cagayan


Cagayan, Philippines – Two friends who went swimming at a river in Abulug, Cagayan reportedly drowned over the weekend.

The drowning happened when victims Aldrin Jake Cabalang and JakeVie Balbas, both 16 years old went to the river with their other friend past 12:00 noon on Saturday, June 03, to swim, Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer Georgina Tabor told Cagayan Provincial Information Office.


While they were bathing in the river, the two minors were allegedly dragged by the strong current at the deeper portion of the water.


Their other friend tried to rescue them by extending a bamboo for them to grab ahold of but it didn’t work. It was past 2:00 p.m. on the said date when rescue teams were alerted about the drowning incident.

Upon receipt of the report, authorities launched a search and rescue operation which led to the recovery of Balbas’s body past 1:00 p.m. and the retrieval of Cabalang past 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 04.


The victims’ remains were already turned over to their respective families.
