Typhoon Florita leaves P34.8M damage to agriculture in Kalinga

Tabuk City, Kalinga – The heavy downpour brought about by Severe Tropical Storm ‘Florita’ left over P34.8 million worth of damage to agriculture in Kalinga, reported the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Operations Center of Department of Agriculture-Cordillera.


‘Florita’ made landfall in the vicinity of Maconacon, Isabela on Tuesday, August 23 and barreled through Northern Luzon. Kalinga and Cagayan were said to be in the path of the tropical storm.

As of Thursday afternoon, August 25, the operations center through DA-Cordillera Regional Director Cameron Odsey stated that P34,887,757 valued worth of corn and rice were destroyed in Kalinga province.


In Mt. Province, P1,782,120.94 worth of high-value crops were damaged; P142,878.67 worth of planted indigenous rice crops in Ifugao; P7,150,140.85 worth of rice crops in Apayao; and P47,740 in Abra. The data brings the total damage to agriculture in Cordillera region to P44,010,647.46.


According to Odsey, their department expects increase of said value of damaged crops upon the completion of data from the local government units.


The local reports, he explained, will be validated for the provision of necessary intervention.
