Solana, Cagayan – Snakebite that can kill pupils was prevented when the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Cagayan Valley caught a venomous King Cobra inside a classroom in Balao Elementary School in Solana on Tuesday, January 10.

King Cobra which is endemic to tropical jungles in Southern and Southeast Asia is one of the deadliest snakes in the world, along with the Monocled Cobra, and Egyptian Cobra, among others.

Cagayan PIO reported that DENR Region 2 was notified by a classroom teacher upon the discovery of the snake in her classroom while they were cleaning.

Jovencio Payba and two experts in snake management proceeded to the area and caught the snake using a snake tong and a sack.

The snake measures 1.4 meters in length and is matured, according to Payba.

Payba explained the snake might have sought shelter inside the cabinet since one of its most distinct features is to look for areas that give them warmth during the cold seasons.

He added the snake probably came from the rice fields at the back of the school compound.

To address worries that a snake of such kind is thriving in said school, Payba assured there is a lesser chance that other King Cobras are present in the area since such kind feed on snakes.

As for the caught cobra, it was released in a remote part of Solana.

With the said incident, the public is urged to notify DENR Cagayan Valley if they happen to catch sight of dangerous animals for appropriate action.
