41-year-old man in Benguet buried alive in mine mishap

Updated: Jul 24, 2022

Benguet, Philippines – A 41-year-old mine development supervisor in Benguet died after being buried alive by debris from a sudden rock fall in the mining area of Philex Mining Corporation at around 4 in the afternoon on July 15.

The victim was identified as Danny Bunnag Dammit, a father of 3 children and a resident of Camp 3, Tuba, Benguet.

The physician who attended the victim said he died from cardiopulmonary arrest secondary to asphyxia after his body was buried under rock debris.

Dammit was with a workmate, Vergel Moguiyeng, who was also on duty that day but survived the tragic incident.

Initial investigation of the police said Dammit and Moguiyeng were inside the mine at work within 798-meter level depth when large portions of rock collapsed on them.

Moguiyeng was able to dash to the nearest exit but Dammit was unfortunately caught by rockfall and was buried underneath.

Investigation-On-Case, Police Staff Sargeant Jefferson Taruc, through Bombo Radyo Baguio, said the recovery of the body of Dammit took several hours of work with rescuers working through massive rocks.

The victim’s body was immediately taken to Sto. Niño Hospital of Philex Mining Corporation, but he was declared dead on arrival.

Based on the information shared by the victim’s relative, Dammit’s body was transported today to his mother’s place in Nueva Vizcaya for his wake and burial.
