Army launched assault against rebels in Cagayan

Cagayan, Philippines – Major Jekyll Julian Dulauan, Spokesperson of the 5th Infantry Division, in an interview with Cagayan Provincial Information Office, said that government troops launched an operation last night, September 20 in Barangay Dungeg against a group of rebels encamped in the area.

Dulauan revealed that the camp is where the rebels manufacture bombs. He said that there were around 40 rebels believed to be from the East Front Komiteng Probinsiya Cagayan staying in the camp.

During the operation, the 5ID spokesperson said that an exchange of fire between the government troops and the communist terrorist group transpired early morning of September 21.

Casualties on the side of the New People’s Army, he said, are possible after the encounter with the military troops during a combat operation in the mountains of Barangay Dungeg, Sta Teresita.

There were no reported casualties on the side of the military.

“Sa panig ng kasundaluhan, wala pong casualty at sa panig naman ng NPA, sigurado yan na merong mga casualties,” he said.

The clearing operation is still ongoing.

Meantime, Dulauan said the NPA hideout was discovered through the various information of extortion in Buguey, Sta Teresita, Sta Ana, and Lal-lo.

“Alaraming na yung extortion na nangyari diyan sa Buguey, Sta Teresita, Sta Ana, Lal-lo kaya napagdugtong-dugtong natin yung lahat ng information kaya nasundan natin o na-locate natin itong hideout ng teroristang grupo na talaga namang totoo na andiyan na naman sila,” he said.
