Baguio City, Philippines – Baguio-based martial artist Mark Striegl took home a bronze medal for the Philippines in the 2024 Paris Sambo Grand Prix at the Salle Pierre Charpy in France.

Striegl played in the Men's 71kg category of the competition on June 1 where he was qualified to play for the silver medal after defeating players from France and Belgium.

The athlete, however, landed for bronze after losing in the silver medal match against Ukraine.

In a Facebook post, Striegl, who was a gold medalist in the combat sambo at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, celebrated his win along with the achievements of the Philippine Sambo Team and thanked his supporters.

“Congratulations Team Philippines and BIG thank you to my WinZir family for the support!!” he expressed.

For its part, The Philippine Sports Commission commended Striegl and his fellow athletes Chino Tancontian and Aislinn Yap who both won gold in the competition for the pride they brought to the country.

“Congratulations to all of you! Muli niyo na namang ipinakitang #BidaAngBayaningManlalaro!” the agency wrote.
