Cagayan Valley soldiers fighting insurgency in Sulu come home to family

Isabela, Philippines – Cagayan Valley soldiers who are fighting insurgency in Mindanao enjoyed a moving and heart-warming reunion with their family after months of deployment and combat duty.


These 30 military troops from region 2 were flown to their loved ones on March 15, the 5th Infantry Division reported.

They are part of the youngest division of the Philippine Army, the 11th Infantry Division based in Jolo, Sulu which was created on December 17, 2018.


Said infantry is at the forefront in battling Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and other terrorist groups in Mindanao.


Among their operations in the past 5 years include launching an all-out assault against Abu Sayyaf following the bombing at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Jolo on January 27, 2019. They also dealt with the suicide bombing on June 28 of the same year that killed 3 soldiers and 3 civilians.

On November 25, 2018, said division also helped in rescuing a 70-year-old British businessman and his Filipino wife from their Abu Sayyaf abductors.


Due to their dedication and sacrifices, these 30 troops from Cagayan Valley were given a month off to be with their loved ones who waited for them with placards and open arms at the Tactical Operations Group 2 camp in Cauayan City, Isabela.


From there, they were ferried by the Philippine Army to the terminal going to their respective homes.
