College students drown while having picnic in Cagayan sea

Cagayan, Philippines – Two college students, one graduating, drowned at the Ballesteros, Cagayan sea while on a picnic on Saturday, March 25.


The two students identified as Lucy Ann Ugalino and Ryan Urianza Mendoza were swimming at the sea when the incident transpired around 5:00 p.m., says a report by the Cagayan Provincial Information Office.

Ugalino,23, a graduating Civil Engineering student at Cagayan State University – Carig Campus was rescued on the same day. However, she was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.


The lifeless body of 21-year-old Mendoza, on the other hand, was retrieved on Sunday around 11:25 a.m. Said victim was a 2nd-year student at Northern Cagayan Colleges Foundation Inc.


According to World Health Organization, at least 3,000 die of drowning annually in the Philippines. It is also the 10th leading cause of death among children in the country.
