Cordillera records 1,168 inmates occupying region’s jail facilities

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Around 1,168 persons deprived of liberty in the Cordillera are currently in the different jail facilities in the region, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology Cordillera reported in a press conference on May 16, 2022.

In a Facebook live posted by the Philippine Information Agency Cordillera, BJMP-CAR Chief of Community Relations Service, Jail Inspector Erlinda Las-egan informed that a total of 20 jails are operating in the region, but only 12 have inmates, while the remaining 8 are unoccupied.


Of the 12 jail facilities in the region, around 1,168 PDLs are being accommodated. She added that 1,035 of said population are male while 133 are female.


According to Las-egan, Baguio City Jail and La Trinidad District Jail are so far the only congested facilities in the region.


She further said that with the coordination with their higher officers, they will be able to locate lands where they can construct bigger jails like the Ifugao, Alfonso Lista, and the Tabuk District Jail.

Meantime, in celebration of the 35th anniversary of Commission on Human Rights, Las-egan assured that the rights of the inmates under their care are being observed.


“But as of now, rest assured po na ang human rights po ng ating mga PDL sa loob ng piitan is very well observed and we are one with the Commission on Human Rights for the implementation of the rights of these people under our care,” she said during her closing statement.
