Updated: Feb 1, 2023

Tabuk City, Kalinga – While visiting Tinglayan municipality, one astounding sight tourist should not miss is the famous ‘Sleeping Beauty’ mountain.

But would you like to try conquering its summit which you can hike for about 7-8 hours?

Known for its shape that you can catch sight from afar which is an image of a woman, the local government unit of Tinglayan has been longing to offer its visitors the beauty of the mountain putting its improvement and development a priority under their municipal budget.

The mountain offers trekking activities and could serve as a camping site for adventurous mountaineers.

On her Facebook, Department of Tourism Regional Director Jovy Ganongan hinted the inclusion of the mountain, also called Mt. Mating-oy, in the department’s exploration of trails with historical value as well as special and unique natural features.

“Chance upon the Mayor of Tinglayan, Kalinga Sacrament Gumilab, no time to waste as he shared his plan to open a trekking route connecting Tinglayan and Tanudan traversing the Sleeping Beauty Mountain, also called Mt. Mating-oy,” the regional director said.

In their Cordillera Mountain Trail Expedition conducted last year, Mt. Binaratan in Tanudan was one of the mountains assessed whether its trekking routes are accessible and safe for tourists to traverse as they plan to increase the number of tourists in the region, both domestic and international mountain enthusiasts.

“Last year, we traversed the legendary Mount Binaratan in Tanudan and it will be an ultimate adventure to connect these two legendary mountains, Ganongan added, denoting a positive response to the plan.

Mayor Gumilab, in an interview, added a meeting was already scheduled regarding the proposal.

“We have scheduled a meeting in her office to talk about it. She said the plan is a potential tourism project which needs to be prepared,” Gumilab relayed.

Tinglayan, as recalled is frequented by tourists as it is home to the country’s ‘oldest mambabatok’ - Apo Whang-od, even tagged as the second most visited locality in Kalinga in 2022.
