Festival celebrations in Ifugao aimed at preserving cultural heritage


Ifugao, Philippines – Cultural heritage of the Province of Ifugao, especially those intangible cultural practices such as chants and performing arts are being preserved through the holding of traditional festivals.


The province recently concluded its 56th anniversary celebration dubbed as “Gotad Ad Ifugao: Dinalnogan di Punhanaan, Luminggopan ya Kiphodan” (A celebration of Thanksgiving, Recovery and Development).”


Through said festival, Ifugao Ethnic Skills were showcased namely “Muntuknul”, “Mun-abol”, “Mum-paot”, Muntalakin Hi Atag”, “Munlaga Hi Dingding” and “Munlaga Hi Kubi”.


The various ethnic skills were experienced by visiting tourists and some locals during the event.


“The number one aim really of this cultural festival is the promotion and preservation of the Ifugao culture and second is the transmission of the indigenous knowledge, skills and practices through these demonstrations,” expressed Provincial Tourism Officer Roscoe Kalaw through PTV-Cordillera.

Restrictions


Kalaw further stressed restrictions that shall be observed in the performance of such cultural festivals.


Tourists wishing to document the local rites, he emphasized, must first secure permission to concerned families.


“There is a common understanding that scripted presentations just to please the researcher or a certain group to perform a rite or a ritual for them to document, we do not allow,” underscored the Provincial Tourism Officer.
