From eye contact to uppercut: Strangers in Baguio locked eyes, then punches flew

Baguio City – What began as a simple exchange of eye contact between two strangers quickly erupted into a street fistfight along Lower Mabini Street, Baguio City, on July 20, leaving both men injured.

According to initial police reports, the two men were walking in opposite directions when they locked eyes. What appeared to be an ordinary glance allegedly escalated into a heated verbal exchange before both men traded punches.

Police identified one of those involved as a 46-year-old self-employed resident of Ambiong Central, La Trinidad, Benguet, who allegedly initiated the confrontation. The other was a 33-year-old call center agent from Barangay Lualhati, Baguio City, who reportedly took offense during the exchange.

Both sustained injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities have yet to disclose the extent of their injuries.

Instead of immediately filing criminal charges, the case has been referred to the concerned barangay for mediation and possible settlement.

The incident quickly gained attention after it was shared on the Bombo Radyo Baguio Facebook page, drawing a mix of humorous and serious reactions from netizens.

One commenter jokingly wrote in Ilocano, "Ag-sunglasses kayo man uray rabii," suggesting that wearing sunglasses—even at night—might prevent similar confrontations.

Another quipped, "Killer eye ba?" while another commenter took a more serious tone, saying, "We need to upgrade our mindset."

The Baguio incident is not the first case in which a perceived "wrong look" allegedly triggered violence.

In June 2026, a Grade 11 transferee student at Father Gratian Murray AFSC Integrated School in Bacolod City was reportedly assaulted by two fellow students after they allegedly took offense at what they described as a "hostile stare."

In another incident the same month, a traffic encounter in Sampaloc, Manila, escalated into a road rage incident after a motorist and a motorcycle rider allegedly exchanged hostile looks, resulting in physical injuries and the filing of criminal complaints.

Police continue to remind the public to exercise restraint and resolve misunderstandings peacefully, warning that seemingly trivial encounters can quickly escalate into violence and possible criminal liability.
