Gov. Tubban underscores significant contribution of cooperatives to local economy

Tabuk City, Kalinga – “The cooperatives contributed significantly to the progress of the local economy,” underscored Governor Ferdinand Tubban during the Kalinga Provincial Cooperative Forum this January 28, 2022, in Bulanao, Tabuk City.

In his keynote message, Tubban cited data proving that cooperatives have boosted the economy through social integration, job creation, and poverty reduction.

He said that the data from the 2020 Cooperative Development Authority shows that the 18,848 cooperatives which are operating in the country generate more than 364,700 plus employment and helped about 111.5 million members.

In the province, he said, the development in the far-flung areas has been aided by groups, associations, or cooperatives, providing jobs to their members or their families.

“We have cooperatives which are helping the coffee industry, cooperatives in rice farming, fishery, livestock, crafts and metal production, multipurpose cooperatives, and other entrepreneurial endeavors,” Tubban explained.

Moreover, the governor acknowledged that aside from their contribution to the economy, cooperatives likewise play a big role in the social, cultural, and spiritual development of their members thus, policymakers should consider the ‘opportunities that cooperativism can offer for a sustainable development in rural communities.’

Officials of cooperatives and partner agencies, according to Tubban, are then left with a challenge to minimize failures or inactivity during the pandemic.

He then encouraged participants to take advantage of the forum that was designed as an avenue for them to voice their concerns and have them be addressed by the provincial government and key agencies through the Provincial Cooperative Enterprise and Development Office (PCEDO) headed by Arlene Oyando and partner agencies.
