Mt. Province, Philippines – The scenic Maligcong Rice Terraces has a chance to win US$30,000 after its nomination for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) - Greece Melina Mercouri International Prize for the Safeguarding and Management of Cultural Landscapes.

Established in 1995, the award aims to recognize outstanding examples of action to safeguard and enhance the world’s cultural landscapes. It was named after the actress and activist Melina Mercouri, a strong advocate of integrated heritage conservation and former Minister of Culture of Greece, UNESCO explained.

To qualify for the award, individuals, institutions, other entities, communities or non-governmental organizations must have made a significant contribution to the safeguarding, management, and enhancement of the world’s major cultural landscapes or the combined works of nature and people and embody a long-lasting, profound and intimate relationship between people and their natural environment.

Maligcong derived its name from “ligcong”, a local term that means to level land for a rice field. It was through the hard work of the locals that the mountains were whittled into breathtaking rice terraces. The people then named the village Maligcong, meaning surrounded by rice fields.

The said wonder is known for its stone walls which make the terraces more stable to withstand erosion.

To safeguard and further enhance the rice terraces, the Cultural Properties Protection and Regulation Division (CPPRD) of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) nominated it for the international prize.

Application for the award is ongoing until May 31, 2023.
