Mangliwan wins his first-ever gold medal in Asian Para Games

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Delivering Philippines’ 5th gold medal in the 4th Asian Para Games couldn’t be more remarkable for yKalinga para-athlete Jerrold Pete Mangliwan as this is also his first-ever gold in the competition.

Racing on lane 6 on Oct. 27 in Hangzhou, China, Mangliwan bested the other participants in the Men's 400m-T52 with 1:01.54 time, his new personal best record.

In an interview with GURU Press Cordillera, the yKalinga wheelchair racer said he didn’t get any medal in his first three attempts at winning one in the Asian Para Games.

With perseverance and continuous training, Mangliwan who only hoped to secure any of the first three ranks in said competition is beyond grateful as he got more of what he prayed for with the gold medal he received.

“Sobrang saya kasi finally after 4th Asian Para Games nakakuha narin ng medal and sobra sobra pa ang ibinigay ni God, Paralympic medal ang wala sa resume ko,” he said.

Apart from his first gold, Mangliwan also snatched the country’s first silver in the 4th Asian Para Games when he competed in Men's 100m - T52 on Oct. 24.

Based on the official medal tally as of 4:00 p.m. of Oct. 28, Philippines is at 9th place with 10 gold, 4 silver, and 5 bronze.
