Buguias, Benguet – For the past few years, post-harvest losses have been a problem in most of the vegetable-producing provinces in the Cordillera region, but not anymore for the farmers in Buguias as the solar-powered cold storage facility has already been erected in the area.

The P16 million-worth facility, which is a joint project by the Philippine government and Japan Agricultural Exchange Council (JAEC) through the Safe Vegetable Production Technology Dissemination and Vegetable Distribution System Improvement Project, was inaugurated Wednesday, June 21, 2023.

Equipped with Japanese farming technologies, the facility will ensure the quality improvement of vegetable produce in Benguet, not only giving a boost in farmers’ income but will assure consumers of buying healthy, fresh, and quality vegetables.

In the agreement made by the involved parties in the project, the operation of the facility will be handled first by the JAEC until October 2024.

The right to operate the project, as well as its maintenance, will be transferred to the local government unit of Buguias after the said duration.

In a statement, DA-CAR Assistant Provincial Coordinating Officer, Cirilo Batan, told farmers to adopt ‘farming technologies’ to ensure the sustainability of the initiative given that the implementation of the project determines its success.

Meantime, Governor Melchor Diclas said he is hopeful the project would facilitate a simplified flow of goods, from the farm to the cold storage facility, then onto refrigerated transportation to the market.

As recalled, the proposal of setting up a solar-powered cold storage facility was crafted in 2021 and its construction started in March 2022.
