P26.7M Facility in Benguet turned over to farmers to solve wastage from overproduction

Benguet, Philippines – Wastage of farm produce due to overproduction sometimes occur in the Cordilleras but shall now at be solved with the inauguration of the P26,748,878 million Minimal Processing and Packaging Facility.


The turn-over of the facility at the Benguet Agripinoy Trading Center (BAPTC) was done on Thursday, December 23, 2021.


The facility has been established with a goal of enhancing post-harvest services to farmers through post-harvest equipment for processing, packaging and marketing as well as to improve the quality of products.


According to the Department of Agriculture-Cordillera, the facility was funded under the DA Bayanihan II stimulus package and was jointly implemented by DA and Benguet State University (BSU).

Accordingly, the upgraded facility at the trading center is one of the solutions which could address the problems of overproduction, which often results into a sudden drop in prices of farm products.


Processing to be done at the facility


DA-CAR-OIC- Regional Executive Director Cameron Odsey, during the groundbreaking ceremony in 2020, said the processing facility at BAPTC will focus on the initial processing activities such as washing and trimming, while the more complicated ones such as juicing is to be done at the processing facility in BSU.


Meantime, in a statement, BSU President Felipe Salaing Comila has committed to provide best experts in the University to help and assist towards the development of trading vegetables with better packaging.

Meantime, a total of Php27,865,000.00 financial grant under the Enhanced Kadiwa ni Ani at Kita was also awarded to some 26 DA-assisted farmers cooperatives and associations (FCAs) and one local government unit in the major vegetable-producing municipalities in Benguet, Mt. Province, and Ifugao alongside the activity.


Said grant, according to DA-CAR, “was used for the establishment of a processing and packing facility for the FCAs’ value-adding activities as assemblers of farmers’ produce while other FCAs utilized it in purchasing of transport and delivery vehicles (reefer vans) in support to the market of their products and logistics”.
