P4.49B Chico River Pump Irrigation Project in Pinukpuk inaugurated


Pinukpuk, Kalinga –With the partial turn-over of the P4.49 billion Chico River Pump Irrigation Project in Pinococ, Pinukpuk on Saturday, June 25, greater harvests for 4,350 farming families in Tuao and Piat, Cagayan and in Pinukpuk is expected.


National Irrigation Administration (NIA) Administrator Ricardo Visaya and Yang Guoliang, a minister counselor from China, led the inauguration of the first flagship infrastructure project financed by China under President Rodrigo Duterte’s “Build, Build, Build” program.

The irrigation project shall irrigate 8,700 hectares in Kalinga and Cagayan – 7,150 hectares in Tuao town, 380 hectares in Piat town and 1,170 hectares in Pinukpuk.


The irrigation project is a loan grant from China government thru the Export Import Bank, PIA Region 2 said.


The main water source is the Chico River in Barangay Katabbogan, Pinukpuk, Kalinga.


In a statement during the turn-over, Visaya said the project will surely boost the harvest and productivity, benefitting palay farmers of the two provinces.


He added this will support the agricultural development program of the government and will aid in the attainment of food security in the two provinces.


Visaya further expressed his thanks to President Duterte for prioritizing the implementation of the project as he gave recognition to the support of China government for funding the project.

As recalled, the project's groundbreaking ceremony took place on June 8, 2018, with its aim of constructing new diversion and canal systems to deliver an adequate and stable water supply to 8,700 hectares of agricultural land.


The project includes the construction of a pump house, sub-station, transmission line, diversion main canal, lateral canals, accessory structures, service/access road, and terminal facilities for the Chico River PIP.
