Too fast and too reckless: Drivers of viral jeepney drag race in Isabela hit with 90-day suspension

TABUK CITY, Kalinga – A pair of passenger jeepneys that appeared to be engaged in a drag race along a national highway in Naguilian, Isabela, have been pulled off the road after transport authorities suspended both the drivers and the units, following a viral video that showed students and other commuters caught in the dangerous ride.

The incident took place on July 14, 2026, but drew nationwide attention two days later after a video recorded by another motorist rapidly spread across social media.

The footage showed the two passenger jeepneys speeding and overtaking each other while traveling toward San Mariano, Isabela. Several passengers, including students, were seen riding on the roofs of the vehicles, while others remained inside the already overcrowded jeepneys.

The video quickly sparked public outrage, with many netizens condemning the reckless behavior and expressing concern for the safety of the passengers.

The public backlash prompted government transportation agencies to immediately investigate the incident.

Following its initial investigation, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) Region 2 placed the drivers' licenses and the registrations of the two jeepneys under a 90-day preventive suspension on July 17, pending the resolution of administrative cases.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Region 2 also suspended the public utility vehicle franchises of the two jeepneys, preventing them from operating while the investigation is ongoing.

Reports identified the drivers as cousins who were on their way home when the incident occurred.

In an interview with Bombo Radyo Cauayan, the drivers apologized for their actions, admitting they had endangered the lives of their passengers. They said they never expected the incident to gain nationwide attention until the video went viral on social media.

Although no injuries were reported, the incident has renewed concerns over reckless driving, overloading, and allowing passengers to ride on the roofs of public utility vehicles—practices that continue to endanger commuters, especially students who rely on jeepneys as their primary mode of transportation.

Authorities reminded drivers and operators that public utility vehicles carry a greater responsibility because the lives of passengers are entrusted to them every day. They also warned that violations compromising commuter safety will continue to be met with administrative and legal sanctions.
