Tabuk City, Kalinga – Two individuals in Lubuagan, Kalinga, were confirmed dead following a landslide in the area on Monday, November 10.

The landslide was triggered by the continuous rains brought by Typhoon Uwan, which has been affecting the Cordillera region since the weekend.

In an interview with Guru Press Cordillera, Lubuagan Municipal Administrator Atty. James B. Tagaotao shared that, based on initial information forwarded to his office, the victims and their companions were attempting to save belongings from a house in Barangay Western Uma after an earlier soil erosion occurred nearby.

Unfortunately, while they were at the site, another massive soil erosion occurred around 2:30 p.m., burying them alive. Tagaotao noted that the area is highly prone to landslides.

“Based sa info nga naited kanyak ket mapan da kuma iretrieve dagijay usar jay balay ta nagka soil erosion idi napan da jay, bigla nagka soil erosion manen natangay sila,” reported Tagaotao.

According to authorities, the casualties were identified as Eric Magwin and Aki Magwin. In addition, Tagaotao said that two others—Kagawad Redento Tinio and Ricardo Magwin—remain missing.

The municipal administrator added that rescue and retrieval operations could not immediately continue because the roads leading to the landslide site were completely blocked by debris, mud, and fallen soil.

With the ongoing rains, the risk of additional landslides remains high. Authorities have decided to resume retrieval operations on Tuesday, November 11.

“We will do search and retrieval operations tomorrow ta awan pagnaan ta puro landslide dalan, and burial support and in-kind assistance will be given to the families of the victims,” he added.

Fortunately, two individuals—Dongan Linggayo and Bondad Salicanto—survived the tragic incident. Tagaotao assured that the victims’ families will receive support from the LGU, including burial assistance, financial aid, and other forms of help.

This is a developing story.
