World War 2 grenade recovered in Alcala, Cagayan to be put in museum

Alcala, Cagayan – A rusty grenade believed to date back to the Second World War was found in a vacant lot in Zone 3, Pared, Alcala, on Sunday, November 19.

The bomb, a type 97 fragmentation grenade, was said to have been used by the Japanese Army and the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War 2.

Rimelito Dungca and his relatives happened to be in the area visiting their family house when they saw the grenade.

They immediately alerted authorities about the bomb, who quickly proceeded to the area.

While waiting for personnel of the Provincial Explosives and Canine Unit (PECU) in Cagayan to recover the vintage bomb, Alcala police were the first ones to arrive to safeguard the area.

It is suspected that the explosive was excavated at the quarry site at the Pared River and was only brought to the place along with the sand collected.

Police said the recovered grenade will be brought to Pampanga and will be put into a museum.

To recall, a high-explosive bomb was also recovered in the province, particularly in Peñablanca, last September.

The bomb was discovered while a businessman was conducting an inventory of various metals sold at his junk shop in Camasi, Peñablanca, on September 27.
