Tabuk City, Kalinga―With the prohibition of tricycles to ply the Agbannawag to Dagupan route in Tabuk City, tricycle drivers affected have requested the Sangguniang Panlungsod to reconsider allowing them to operate on the said travel path.

The issue of prohibition has become a bone of contention between the trike drivers and jeepney drivers who compete for passengers in a bid to augment their income amidst imposition of restrictions and observance of social distancing on the transport industry.

It can be recalled that the SP members approved Resolution No. 044-A Series of 2021 prohibiting tricycle drivers from picking up and ferrying commuters from Agbannawag to Dagupan and vice versa. The resolution said the trikes are depriving the public utility jeepneys (PUJs) of passengers who are the authorized ones to operate on Roxas-Tabuk and vice versa route.

The resolution further stated that the operation of said tricycles along national road is outside their designated route and a violation punishable under existing City Traffic Ordinances.

It further stated that the DILG MC No. 2020-036 likewise prohibit them from operating on national highways.

In response, the trike drivers are appealing for a reconsideration through a resolution addressed to the City Mayor.

In said resolution of the trike drivers, the petitioners stated that they have no other source of income and that the prohibition shall greatly affect how they provide the needs of their families.

The trike drivers' resolution additionally reasoned that commuters expressed preference using the tricycle for being dependable, compared to commuting using the jeepney. The tricycle drivers are also delivering commuters directly to their destination, as their way of helping them to lessen expenses, unlike riding to Jeepneys which only pass along the national and provincial roads.

During the regular session of the Council on May 20, With Vice Mayor Bernard Glenn Dao-as presiding, the members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod thought it best to refer the matter to the committee on transportation for review.
