Apayao solon to Cordillera youth: Use SocMed to promote autonomy, ‘wag gamitin kung saan-saan lang

Apayao, Philippines – While social media has the ability to deliver real-time updates, empower individuals and enable people to have a collective voice, its platforms are also sources of fake news and other forms of misinformation.

With this, Eleanor Bulut-Begtang, the Representative of the Lone District of Apayao, called on Cordilleran youth to make use of social media responsibly by fact-checking social media content and further use their enlightenment gained through their research to secure a stand on arising issues and be involved in planning and decision-making in their communities.

The solon made the remark as Apayao welcomed the dashing candidates of the search for Mr. and Ms. Cordillera Autonomy Youth Ambassador 2023 through a cocktail dinner held Monday, July 10, at the province’s Tourism and Sports Complex in San Gregorio, Luna.

Among the concerns that the youth sector must strive to fully understand is the autonomy as they will be the ones to benefit greatly from the fruits of it.

“Use the internet to research reliable data on autonomy. Use Facebook and other SocMed platforms to promote, to educate your fellow youth on autonomy. Wag gamitin para kung saan-saan lang, pangontra sa gobyerno,” Begtang said.

Being well-informed on self-determination, she added, will result in greater appreciation of what it is all about.

“Autonomy is for you, our dear young ones. We will soon get old and very old and pass this life. The fruits of what we are working on now as an administrative region may not be enjoyed by all of us anymore but we are now laying the foundation for you to continue later on. The direction is yours to continue,” added the congressman.

Begtang then posed a challenge to members of said sector to make efforts and contribute towards the attainment of the ultimate goal of a Cordillera Autonomous Region.

As a gift to the seven pairs vying for the Cordillera Autonomy Youth Ambassador crowns, she gave tokens to the candidates as she wished them good luck. Winning contenders will be crowned Friday, July 14, at EKB Multi-purpose Gymnasium in Pudtol, Apayao.
