Balbalan, Kalinga – Mayor Almar Malannag of Balbalan, Kalinga stepped up his efforts to protect his constituents from suffering losses due to swine deaths.

Heeding to the matter raised before him by Municipal Agriculturist Arnel Malaggay, Malannag recently had a conversation with the Provincial Veterinarian of Abra, Dr. Jomar Sales, the Municipal Information Office relayed in a press release.

During their talk, the mayor expressed the town’s concern. As earlier pointed out by Malaggay, swine traders in Abra who are passing through the ASF checkpoints in Balbalan continue to insist on proceeding to transport the hogs to Tabuk, even without showing their ASF clearance.

The matter, as Malannag feels, should not be under his administration’s responsibility. However, he observed that the city government of Tabuk is not taking the matter seriously.

As a result, Balbalan mayor took the initiative to act on said concern with the fear that the pork products sold at Tabuk market may be purchased by the people of Balbalan which might cause the spread of the viral disease within the locality.

According to Sales, ASF checkpoints established in Balbalan may apprehend those traders without ASF clearance.

The provincial veterinarian of Abra further assured Malannag that he would not issue such clearance unless the swine traders passed the test being carried out by his office.

With this, the mayor directed concerned offices to intercept those who attempt to transport hogs or hog products without showing necessary documents, in observance of ASF protocols.
