Benguet, Philippines – Benguet State University (BSU) has secured ₱250 million in funding from Senator Erwin Tulfo for the construction of new facilities for its College of Medicine and College of Nursing.

The announcement was shared by Congressman Eric Yap during the Strawberry Festival held on March 18 at the La Trinidad Municipal Gymnasium.

According to local media reports, Yap said the senator plans to provide annual funding for Benguet’s infrastructure projects, prioritizing La Trinidad as the main entry point for tourists from Baguio City.

For this year, Tulfo allocated ₱250 million to BSU, with the goal of addressing the province’s classroom shortage by the end of 2028. The initiative also responds to the university’s lack of a medical school, despite being classified as a SUC Level IV institution—the highest category in the SUC leveling system for state universities and colleges.

In line with this, Tulfo introduced a measure in the Senate titled: “An Act Establishing a College of Medicine in the Benguet State University in the Municipality of La Trinidad, Province of Benguet, to be known as the Benguet State University College of Medicine, and Appropriating Funds Therefor.”

The proposed legislation aims to institutionalize the medical program and ensure sustained government support for its development.

Plans to establish the College of Medicine began as early as 2021 to 2022, with initial government support coming in early 2023 through a ₱45 million fund from Senator Pia Cayetano under the 2023 General Appropriations Act.

By September 2023, a groundbreaking ceremony for the college complex was held at the BSU campus in La Trinidad, marking the official start of construction. From 2025 to early 2026, BSU continued to secure additional funding, including this year’s allocation from Senator Tulfo.

With construction underway, BSU moves closer to opening its medical program, with officials optimistic that continued support will fast-track its completion and strengthen healthcare education in the region.
