Cagayan police file 3 vote-buying cases, investigates 74 more

Updated: May 22, 2022

Cagayan, Philippines – A week after the May 9, 2022 election, the Philippine National Police Cagayan received 77 complaints on vote-buying in the province.

Cagayan Police Provincial Director, Police Colonel Renell Sabaldica, through Cagayan Provincial Information Office, informed that they already filed charges for three cases of complaints while the remaining 74 are still being investigated.

Although there were reported incidents of violence during the election period, Sabaldica mentioned that the recently concluded election in Cagayan was generally peaceful, explaining that the case of physical violence that transpired in Enrile, a grenade explosion in Tuao, grave threat in Piat, and other cases were not election-related.

Sabaldica acknowledged the efforts of the officials and the law enforces who worked together to ensure a peaceful May 2022 local and national poll in Cagayan.

As of May 13, the Comelec Commissioner and Task Force Kontra Bigay head Aimee Ferolino said that they have received around 400 complaints of vote-buying with ‘supporting evidence’ in the country.

During a press briefing, she said that they didn’t just receive vote-buying or vote-selling reports, but there were also complaints on video clips that went viral which they were just tagged.

However, the commissioner conveyed that some reporters of vote-buying incidents are afraid to testify and that in other cases, there is lack of witness or evidence to substantiate the allegations.
