Lubuagan, Kalinga – A specie of mosquito that carries and spread dengue virus was detected in Barangay Poblacion following the dengue surveillance and larvae collection done last month in the said barangay, the Rural Health Unit Lubuagan reported.

Angelite Duguiang, a medical technologist of the RHU disclosed they found Aedes albopictus mosquito on Baobao Street, at the municipality’s gymnasium, and at the Health Unit’s premises.

This means dengue could be lurking around as the carrier of dengue virus belongs to the genus Aedes. The primary vector among the species is the Aedes Aegypti. However, the Aedes albopictus is also a potential vector of the dengue virus even though it is said to be less likely to live as close to people or to spread disease.

From January 2022 to present, there have been 24 dengue cases recorded in Lubuagan.

Larvae collection and dengue surveillance in other barangays will be done next week.

The RHU advises the public to practice the 4 o’clock habit – the stop, look, and listen. Stop means dropping what a person is doing at 4:00 in the afternoon to focus on mosquito control. Then they should look for possible mosquito breeding sites and destroy them. Lastly, they should listen to bulletins and instructions about measures against dengue.

“Always practice the 4oclock habit, maglinis ng bakuran, itapon ang mga naiipon na tubig. For children naman, let them wear LOOSE long sleeves & pants or use mosquito repellents,” they advised.

The RHU said Information Education Campaign about dengue prevention in Lubuagan is done regularly along with clean up drives to avoid more cases of the mosquito-borne disease.
