Earthquake kills 5 in Cordillera, over a hundred injured

Tabuk City, Kalinga – 5 casualties were documented and over a hundred injured following the magnitude 7 earthquake that hit Northern Luzon on Wednesday morning, July 27, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.


The dead include two from Benguet and one each from Kalinga, Abra, and Mt. Province.


In Benguet, the reported cases were a 28-year-old construction worker identified as Aaron Col-iteng, and a 32-year-old man – Resty Tavas. Col-iteng was a resident of Pinsao Pilot, Baguio City.


He was killed when the building collapsed on him while he was trapped in the basement. Tavas, meantime, lost his life when he was buried in an eroded portion of a mountain in Barangay Taloy Sur, Tuba.


Benguet PIO noted four individuals were injured in said province– 2 senior citizens from Bokod and one each from Bakun and Kibungan town.

Earthquake victims in Kalinga


A worker of a rock-netting project died in Pantikian, Balbalan after he was hit by a falling boulder.


He was about to be brought to a nearby hospital but died while being transported.


Authorities identified the victim as Jefferson Basar, 24, a resident of Tandang Sora, Quezon City. His co-workers Kelwayne Pultz, Joseph Gullipis, Christian Tongdo, Shan Adrian Tebon, Renato Manlapaz Jr., and Arris Ammogawen were injured.

Pultz, Gullipis, Ammogawen and Tongdo are residents of Pantikian, while Tebon and Manlapaz are from Quezon City.


In Lubuagan municipality, 2 were reported to have been injured in separate areas–Marvin Allit, 42, a labourer, and Bergan Guzman, 48.


Allit was said to have been working on the second floor of a building when he fell during the quake, while Guzman’ left foot was injured after jumping from their house.

Casualties from Mt. Province and Abra


In Mt. Province, a 58-year-old man from Bauko died after getting buried by a soil collapse.


It was said he was at the wake of a relative when the incident happened.


He was immediately rescued by authorities but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.


The victim was identified as Andres Sagayo. In Abra, the victim identified as Jonalyn Bilan Siganay, 23, died when debris from a collapsed wall hit his head.


The province listed 86 injured.


The province likewise reported 4 missing – 1 from Luba and 3 from Manabo.
