Santa Marcela, Apayao – The Santa Marcela Local Government Unit in Apayao recently conducted school-to-school sessions to educate the youth on Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS), a way to protect the young ones amid the alarming increase in cases in the country.

Just this June, the Department of Health revealed that 57 new HIV cases are being recorded in the country every day. The number was translated to a 500-percent hike in cases, making the Philippines record the highest increase in new HIV cases in the world. The data likewise showed that a third of these daily new cases are among young Filipinos aged 15 – 24 years old.

Taking action on the alarming numbers, the Santa Marcela LGU, led by Mayor Evelyn Martinez, through the Municipal PopCom Office, headed by Josephine Sungag, conducted Advocacy Sessions among the secondary students in the municipality.

The office first visited Sipa-Imelda National High School on July 29, followed by Consuelo National High School on August 12, and Sta. Marcela National High School on August 19.

The event was composed of lectures and interactive workshops which covered topics on correcting wrong notions about HIV/AIDS and different risk behaviors, empowering the participants to make right and wise decisions on their reproductive health.

In a statement, Mayor Martinez, who acknowledged the DOH CAR for funding and supporting the program, conveyed appreciation to the youth who participated in the event for being inquisitive and for actively taking part in the advocacy.

“Protecting the youth starts with raising awareness, isu nga adda kastoy nga programa tayo iti gobyerno. Ket agpasalamat nak kadagiti a-annak tayo ta active da nga naki-join kadagitoy nga sessions nga naipaay kanyada. Dagitoy kabataan tayo ket isuda iti next nga lideres ken mangituloy iti narugyan tayo, isu nga aramiden tayo iti kabaelan tayo tapnu maprotektaran da kadagitoy nga pressing concerns iti society,” Mayor Martinez expressed.
