College sweethearts in Abra who studied and helped each other in their academic requirements defied common notion that romantic relationship kills students’ dreams as they marched on stage with Latin honors hanging around their neck.

Joyce Camille Barbero Baldemor and Mark Allan Bersamin Bolante graduated Cum Laude at the University of Abra on June 19. Joyce finished Bachelor of Elementary Education while Mark completed Bachelor of Agricultural Technology.

In an interview with GURU Press Cordillera, Joyce revealed she and Mark got together when they were in their sophomore year in college. When asked how they managed to balance their studies and their relationship, Joyce said the main factor they worked out well and turned out successful in their university journey is the healthy and supportive bond they have as well as with their families.

She detailed that she and Mark were always there for each other when academic stress overwhelmed one of them. When she had tons of instructional materials to prepare, Mark was there to help her finish her tasks. When it was Mark who was buried with requirements, Joyce was there to give a lending hand for him to beat deadlines.

“We know when it’s time to focus on studies and when it’s okay to relax and enjoy our time together. We don’t let our relationship get in the way of our goals-instead, we use it as motivation to do better,” she expressed.

Talking from experience, Joyce asserted that getting into a romantic relationship while studying does not always lead to distraction, particularly when the connection is composed of respect, understanding, and balance.

“It’s not true that relationships always become a distraction; in fact, with the right person, it can be a source of strength, inspiration, and emotional support especially during stressful times in school,” she stressed.

Overcoming Challenges

Apart from challenging academic requirements, the two had to overcome financial problems like finding means to pay for other school expenses like project materials, uniforms, transportation or gas, food, among others.

While they were supported by their respective parents, the couple sold snacks in their school and barangay to have additional resources to finance their studies.

“We supported each other. We worked as a team, reminded each other of our goals, and lifted each other up during the hardest moments,” she shared.

Advice to young couples in college

Sharing her advice to college couples, Joyce encouraged them to support each other and to remind one another why they are working hard to finish their schooling. She likewise told them to focus on their studies and to let their relationship be a source of inspiration and not distraction.

“Help each other grow, not just in love, but also in character and purpose. Most of all, never forget to pray and keep God at the center. A relationship built on love, respect, and shared dreams will always inspire you to become better. Not just for yourselves, but for the future you're building together,” she encouraged.
