Cagayan, Philippines – Suspected vote-buying incidents were monitored in three Cagayan municipalities during the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections.

Before the start of the campaign period on Oct. 19, the Department of the Interior and Local Government and the Commission on Elections have joined hands against vote-buying and vote-selling.

At the culmination of the 2023 barangay and youth polls, the Comelec investigates a governor and 13 mayors who were allegedly involved in vote-buying activities at their residences.

The commission likewise earlier confirmed over 100 suspected cases of said illegal activity.

In the Province of Cagayan, Cagayan Police Spokesperson, PCapt. Shiela Foronda told the Provincial Information Office that cases of suspected vote-buying had been observed in three municipalities.

These places were Solana, Pamplona, and Tuguegarao.

Foronda elaborated that in Solana, flyers being distributed were reported to have P50 attached in them; P1,000 in Pamplona, and P500 in Tuguegarao.

The allegations have already been referred to the Comelec, and that the spouse of one of the barangay captain aspirants was charged for vote-buying.
