Baguio City, Philippines – A number of individuals – majority of them students who suffered anxiety attacks - were rushed to the hospital following the earthquake felt in Baguio City past 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 9.
It was around 10:30 a.m. when a magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck La Union, sending intensity V tremors up to Baguio City. Residents, visitors, and students were quick to act and went out to public spaces for safety.
While no casualty was reported as of this writing, the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center(BGHMC) attended to 46 patients as of 2:00 p.m., saying that majority of them are students who experienced panic and anxiety attacks due to the jolt.
The Department of Psychiatry had its psychologists and psychiatrists deployed to provide psychological first aid, emotional support, and debriefing while the hospital emergency medical teams were dispatched to assist in the temporary Emergency Room the BGHMC had set up at its garden. The makeshift ER was established to ensure swift accommodation and management of cases in anticipation of a possible influx of patients.
“BGHMC continues to closely monitor the situation and reminds the public to remain calm and follow safety protocols during aftershocks. The hospital also advises other patients to proceed to their nearest district health centers or to the Baguio City Health Services Office, which are equipped to provide first aid, counseling, and other basic medical services,” the BGHMC wrote.
La Union, meantime, experienced the same case as 28 students from the Sto. Tomas National High School were brought to medical facilities after experiencing dizziness and anxiety during the quake.
