Baguio City, Philippines – While holiday crimes in the Cordillera region significantly dropped in 2025, homicide cases increased, according to data as of January 3, 2026.

This is similar to the nationwide trend where the Philippine National Police recorded significantly fewer focus crimes on Christmas Eve - murder, homicide, physical injury, rape, theft, robbery, vehicle theft and motorcycle theft - with a 66–67% drop compared with the same period in the previous year.

Holiday crimes are usually those committed and logged from December 16 to January 2.

According to data from the Police Regional Office – Cordillera (PRO CAR), as reported by the Mountain Beacon, there were seven index crimes documented in 2025. This represents an 88% decrease compared to the 58 recorded incidents during the same period in 2024.

Comparative data showed that cases of rape during the holidays dropped to zero in 2025 from 14 in 2024; theft dropped to zero from 14; robbery decreased to 1 from 12; physical injuries fell to 3 from 16; and murder remained at one case each for both 2025 and 2024.

While the numbers for these five major crimes dropped or remained steady, homicide increased to 2 cases in 2025 from zero in 2024.

It can be recalled that two killings occurred in Tabuk City on December 25.

Police reported that the incidents took place in separate areas of Tabuk City on Christmas Day. In Barangay Agbannawag, a woman was killed following a domestic dispute, with the suspect fleeing the scene. In Barangay Balong, two men were shot dead inside a farmhouse, and authorities said the suspect later surrendered.

In Abra, a separate fatal shooting occurred on December 30, 2025, in Peñarrubia, where a 53-year-old man was shot dead inside his home while asleep. Police said the suspects remain at large as investigations continue.

Despite these incidents, PRO CAR credited the overall decline in holiday crimes to intensified safety campaigns, heightened police visibility, and close coordination with various line agencies.
