Baguio City, Philippines – Anti-corruption crusader, Mayor Benjamin Magalong expressed his support for social activism activities in the Baguio City, saying it is the only way for change to happen.
Magalong made the statement on September 7 where he joined the ‘Baguio-Benguet Laban sa Korupsyon Protest Rally ‘at the Malcom Square, an event staged in response to the massive flood control anomalies in the country, where the Department of Finance revealed that the Philippines loses P118.5 billion on average annually from 2023 – 2025 to flood control corruption.
According to Magalong who has been advocating for good governance, transparency, and accountability in the government, the corruption in the country is a ‘highly syndicated’ crime whose masterminds are politicians.
“May sala yung contractor, may sala yung mga involved diyan sa mga imprastraktura na proyekto. Hindi pa yan, ang pinakasakim diyan, pinaka-mastermind diyan yung mga pulitiko. Kaya hindi ho dapat tayo huminto dahil ito’y laban ho natin para sa mga kabataan. Laban din ho natin to para sa ating bayan,” Magalong said.
The Mayor then added that in Baguio City, he allows social activism, and that he thanked the youth for taking action and for showing the courage to change the world.
“Kaya dito sa Baguio, pinapayagan ko po ang social activism because this is the only way we will be able to change the world. Sabi ko nga it does not take one to have a title, to have a position, to have influence, to have faith, to have money, all you have to do is have that courage to change the world and you are practically doing it now, and thank to our young people,” he emphasized.
Magalong further stressed that the crusade against corruption should continue until the political leaders and bureaucrats involved in corruption stop.
“Itong kampanya, itong krusada na ito, hindi dapat matapos lang ng anim na buwan, isang taon, dapat tuloy tuloy po to dapat hanggang tumino ang ating mga political leaders,” he said.
