A student of Kalinga State University is suffering from lung cancer but is determined to put up a fight against the disease, saying he would do what it takes to survive it but is asking kind-hearted individuals to shoulder some of the burden.

Genesis Gaston, a 23-year-old Bachelor of Science in Agriculture student and a farmers’ son, stopped going to college after experiencing sudden weight loss and fatigue which later turned to be lung cancer.

It is this February, Genesis said, when he first went for a check-up. The doctors found his lungs were filled with water, and after a week, it got worst until diagnosis revealed it is cancer.

Genesis couldn’t believe his fate and asked why of all people it is he who got it. And why of the years, it is now when he should be finishing his studies to work and be able to help his parents and siblings.

“Gapu ta kayat na nga makaeskwela kadwa mi nga mapan makibilag ti mais ken napadasan na ti napan nagkatulong ta mariknana ti kinarigat ti panagbiag, ken maysa mam adun ti padas na ti biag ta maysa lang isuna nga nakurapai nga pamilya mam,” his cousin said. He also worked part-time in a restaurant. Genesis now cannot do these things.

Genesis’s dream is to be an agriculturist

To be an agriculturist is what Genesis all wanted to be thinking it is one of the noblest professions neglected in the pool of other jobs but relegated as last choice. Genesis believes that studying hard will enable him to get advanced learning to help other farmers left behind in terms of technology in the agricultural industry “kayat ko met tumulong nak met kadagitoy marigrigat nga pada nga mannalon.” However, given his condition, he had to stop his studies since the difficulty the disease has given him afflicted and restricted his body movements.

Genesis said it is heartbreaking and depressing to wake up daily having to see himself in a state of seemingly uselessness, yet he is fully determined to face this cancer and put up a good fight against it to survive. He said he can endure the pain and anguish. “Kayak daytoy ngem kailangak dakayo,” pleaded Genesis in a broken voice as he held back the tears smiling with positivity.

He said if only he could work he won’t come and pleading for help for he knows the hardships of surviving and that everybody is also having a hard time, but he indeed badly needs financial assistance and he intends to survive.

‘Agpatulong nak kuma tapnu malag-anan iti pamilyak’

Genesis shall have his check-up at Cagayan Valey Medical Center on Monday, February 15 and to have his biopsy. With the financial difficulty, he is asking for help for his medications.

“Agpatpatulong nak kuma kas maysa nga cancer patient tapnu maagasan nak tapos malag anan kuma bassit iti pamilyak,” he said.

“Marigatan nak ken lablabanak lang. Makipakpakaasi ak lang nu adda makabasa ditoy. Ti tulong yo ket umanay nga mangited kaniak ti namnama,” he said.
