Santa Marcela, Apayao — Twenty-seven (27) farmers from Barangays Marcela, San Mariano, and Barocboc graduated from Phase II of the Farmer Scientist Training Program (FSTP) on October 14, 2025—marking another milestone in the socio-economic advancement of the town’s farming sector.

The program is implemented by the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI), an attached agency of the Department of Agriculture (DA), which has been recognized as a successful model for agricultural research, development, and extension in the country.

The graduation ceremony, held at the EKB Clubhouse, Municipal Grounds, San Carlos, Santa Marcela, Apayao, also served as the launching of Phase III of the program, underscoring the municipality's continued commitment to agricultural innovation.

The six-month training, conducted from May to October, focused on corn-based production systems and aimed to equip participants with advanced knowledge and sustainable practices designed to optimize yields while minimizing environmental impact.

With the theme “Empowering Farmers to Socio-Economic Progress,” the program seeks to transform the agricultural practices of local farmers through the integration of scientific principles and traditional knowledge.

The graduation ceremony was attended by key stakeholders, including Meriam Palsic, Corn and Cassava Provincial Coordinator of Apayao; Charlie Sagudan, ATI-RTC CAR Center Director; Emmanuel de la Cruz, Shirla Kengay, Engr. Franklin Abad, Municipal Agriculturist; Adelfa Camungao, Municipal Agricultural Officer; Bernard Panabang, FSTP Focal Person from UPLB; and Sharon Feria, Agricultural Technologist and FSTP Focal Person for Santa Marcela.

“The municipality recognizes the vital role of our farmers in ensuring food security and driving economic growth,” Mayor Evelyn Martinez said, adding, “By investing in programs like the FSTP, we are empowering our farmers with the tools and knowledge necessary to thrive in a rapidly evolving agricultural landscape.”

The FSTP represents a strategic investment in the future of Santa Marcela's agricultural sector.

The graduates are expected to serve as catalysts for change, sharing their knowledge and promoting sustainable practices throughout the community. Their success highlights the transformative potential of combining scientific expertise with the practical experience of local farmers.

Great to see programs like this helping people gain practical skills and improve their livelihoods. It reminds me of how investing in education—whether in farming or learning to drive—pays off long-term. For example, understanding the driving training school cost Michigan can lead to better decisions.
