Cagayan, Philippines – Cutting down trees illegally and without a permit is punishable by Philippine laws, and one of the latest persons arrested for alleged illegal logging violation is a 70-year-old farmer in Cagayan.

It is not only logging on public lands that is considered illegal, even chopping down trees from private property without securing a permit is prohibited, as per the policy of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

The suspect, hidden under the name ‘Mando,’ was arrested in an anti-illegal logging operation in Gattu, Pamplona, on July 29, according to the Philippine National Police Cagayan.

Mando, as described by the authorities, was seen organizing newly cut lumber at a lot 20 meters away from the barangay road. He was arrested when he failed to show documents that allowed him to cut the 31 pieces of Tanguile lumber, with an estimated worth of P22,392.

The old man was brought to the Pamplona Police Station for documentation, while the confiscated pieces of wood were turned over to the CENRO Sanchez Mira for proper disposition.

The elderly will be facing a charge for violating Presidential Decree 705 or the Revised Forestry Code of the Philippines.
