Baguio City, Philippines – Today, September 11, 2025, visitors are witnessing a history in the making as the crochet mandala of Cordilleran artist Adelaida “Adel” Guia is set to be officially measured, potentially cementing her as the record holder for the world’s largest crochet mandala by an individual.

Adel, 55, is a self-taught craftswoman who learned crocheting just by observing her mother. She and her Igorot husband, also a craftsman, began selling their needlework in Manila before moving to Baguio in 2016.

In 2021, the first giant mandala she created while on lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic caught public attention at Mandëko Kito artisan market. This gave her courage to dream bigger – a shot for a world record.

Her record attempt, however, has not been easy. Her first Guinness bid in 2023 fell through due to timing issues. In August 2024, she suffered a heart attack, forcing her to pause.

Adel remained undeterred. She picked up her hook in May 22, 2025 and began her Guinness-bound mandala, this time working publicly at Burnham Park’s Rose Garden to attract support and inspire others.

The Cordilleran artist completed 147 rounds to produce the giant mandala spanning 223 inches and weighing 32 kilograms.

In late July, she announced that her application to Guinness was accepted, and with the support from local innovation programs, local officials, and community, she complied with the necessary steps required.

The public viewing of her piece began yesterday and continues today until the official measurement at 6 p.m. at the Atrium of SM City Baguio.

Today’s measurement could secure her work a mark as the largest crochet mandala by an individual in Guinness World Records.

“The crochet mandala represents the strength and beauty of a community working together in harmony… I would be honored if you could join me in SM Baguio to witness this moment. Let’s celebrate resilience, creativity, and what we can achieve when we come together,” wrote Adel in her social media account.
