Drunk man punched to death by barangay tanod in Abra

Updated: Apr 26

Abra, Philippines – A barangay tanod in Patiao village of Peñarrubia, Abra is facing homicide cases after punching a drunk man, leading to his death, local sources said.

It was around 5 p.m. on Saturday when the drunk 36-year-old victim, whose name was withheld, allegedly challenged men to a fight in front of a store in said area.

According to the Chief of the Peñarrubia Police Station, PCPT. June Saliw-an, the suspect was there to supposedly pacify the victim but then the victim lifted his fist and was about to punch. The suspect did not want to get hit first so he punched the victim three times.

The victim then lost consciousness. The barangay captain who witnessed the incident rushed the victim to the nearest hospital but was later declared dead.

He sustained bruises in the neck and in the face.

Meanwhile, the tanod surrendered to authorities. He said he regretted his actions, and added that it was not his intention to kill the victim as he was merely defending himself.

The suspect, accordingly, tried to reconcile with the victim’s family but the latter’s partner wants nothing but justice.
