Kalinga DRRM frontliners train on GIS mapping, risk assessment

Tabuk City, Kalinga―The Department of Science and Technology-Cordillera Administrative Region (DOST-CAR) through the Provincial Science and Technology Center conducts a 3-day Training-Workshop on Basic Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for Mapping and Risk Assessment from March 22 to 24 held at the Davidson's Hotel, Bulanao.


In her opening message, DOST-CAR Regional Director Nancy Bantog commended the plans and actions with partners in the provinces, citing that this is fundamental to disaster and risk reduction and management (DRRM).

“Mapping and Risk assessment are fundamental towards better disaster prevention and mitigation. Recently, strategic tools for warning was recognized in geographic information system which will enable one to generate, assess, differentiate, and utilize data for risk management towards well-informed decision making on disaster prevention and mitigation,” she said.


Hansi G. Dinumla of DOST-CAR during the orientation said, the training-workshop aims to provide framework for activities or projects to be applied for disaster prevention and mitigation in their area of responsibilities.

The 3-day training workshop covers lecture on Vulnerability and Risk Assessment, Community Disaster Risk Assessment, Quantum GIS training –workshop, Introduction to Google Earth, DOST-ASTI Mapping and Risk Assessment Resources and Services, and other Projects.


The training is designed to further provide the LGUs knowledge and hands-on skills on the advanced features of GIS as powerful hazard and risk assessment tool. It also allows the representation of reality and the simulation of different scenarios such as different flood or landslide level.

Participants include the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (PDDRMO), Provincial ENRO, Provincial Engineering Office, Provincial Planning and Development Office, Local DRRMOs, Department of Interior and Local Government, Kalinga State University, and Red Cross Kalinga Chapter.


Geographic Information System or GIS is a framework for gathering, managing, and analyzing data. It integrates many types of data and analyzes spatial location and organizes layers of information into visualizations using maps and 3D scenes. ​
