Isabela, Philippines – While the talks on the collapse of the Sta. Maria – Cabagan bridge in Isabela earlier this year seems to have waned, it got mentioned in the 2025 State of the Nation Address of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., as he vows his administration won’t tolerate corruption.

Among the highlights of the president’s SONA on Monday, July 28, was his commitment not to overlook anomalies in the construction of infrastructure.

“Sa mga proyekto, hindi natin papayagan at palalampasin ang mga katiwalian sa pangangasiwa; Ang kapalpakan sa pagdisenyo at sa pagkakagawa; Ang mababang kalidad at marupok na materyales; Ang pagkaantala ng proyekto; at ang kapabayaan sa tamang pagmentina at pagkumpuni,” he said.

As he tackled corruption issues involving the construction of projects, the fall of the P1.225 billion Sta. Maria – Cabagan bridge in February this year was cited as an example.

“Halimbawa, sa Cabagan-Sta. Maria bridge sa Isabela na sinimulan noong 2014. Ginastusan ng taumbayan ng isang bilyon. Sampung taong tinayo. Noong buksan, ilang araw pa lang, giba na agad. Napakamahal. Ang tagal ginawa. Ang bilis nasira,” he emphasized.

The said Isabela bridge, spanning 990 meter,s collapsed on February 27 after a dump truck carrying boulders from Tabuk City passed through the superstructure, which only allowed light vehicles. The incident has since sparked controversy among the public.
