Peñablanca, Cagayan – Another breakthrough in the field of History and Science is yet to unfold in Callao, Peñablanca as the group of an archeologist responsible for the discovery of the existence of Homo luzonensis thousands of years ago in said area are digging once again at the site.

Professor Armand Mijares of the University of the Philippines and his group made a courtesy call to the provincial government of Cagayan on Tuesday, May 7, to inform the governor of said plan.

According to the Cagayan Information Office, the group will again embark on a journey to find more pieces of evidence proving the existence of ancient humans in the area.

It was in 2007 when Mijares, along with his comrades, discovered fossils of human species which were eventually called ‘Homo luzonensi’.

They unearthed 13 bones dating to about 67,000 years ago from at least three of said species in Callao Cave.

Aside from these bones, it was also in 2021 when they dug up extinct cloud rats or giant rodents believed to have also lived alongside this human species.

Aware of how these discoveries could change world history, the provincial government of Cagayan backed the excavation activities of said archaeologist at Callao Cave and other areas in Peñablanca.

Accompanying Mijares this time are students from Bangkok, Thailand and from the University of California.

In addition to the digging activities, the group will also hold lectures and seminars at various schools in Cagayan regarding the country’s geography.

They will be in the province of Cagayan until June 16, according to Rachel Galamay of Cagayan PIO.
