Tabuk City, Kalinga – A total of six proposed tourism projects are set to be developed in the province, as reported by the Tourism and Industry Sector during the 1st Quarter Provincial Development Council Meeting on March 12 at the Davidson’s Hotel in Bulanao.

The sector, represented by Provincial Tourism Officer (PTO) Lorraine Ngao-i, said that the projects aim to highlight the province’s rich cultural heritage and natural attractions while strengthening its position as a sustainable tourism destination.

The projects include the construction of a National Museum of the Philippines (NMP) satellite office in Rizal. Ngao-i clarified that the building will not be a museum but an office, saying, “This is not a museum; it is a satellite office, and this has been in the works—initial coordination has already been conducted between the NMP and the provincial government.”

Other projects include the development of the Kalinga Archaeological and Cultural Heritage Park, also in Rizal, as well as the construction of a Tourist Rest Area (TRA) in Tinglayan. Ngao-i shared that the proposal was initially pre-approved by Department of Tourism (DOT) Regional Director Jovita Ganongan.

The PTO also explained that earlier TRA proposals submitted by Tabuk City and four other municipalities did not meet the required criteria, as the identified sites were located on private land.

“…yung lima na submitted by the City of Tabuk and four other municipalities last year did not pass the criteria. Kasi yung mga pinakita, lahat ay private lands, which is a violation of the requirement of the TRA. So kailangan po na government-owned yung ipo-propose ng mga munisipyo and the city,” she said.

Another project is the continuation of Phase 2 of the Kalinga Cultural Center and Museum, which is expected to further enhance the preservation and promotion of local culture and history. Also included is the establishment of the BALSA Eco-Cultural Village in Barangays Balawag, Amlao, and Suyang in Tabuk City—aiming to provide an immersive cultural experience while promoting community-based tourism.

Completing the six projects is the development of Socnon Falls in Barangay Asibanglan. According to Ngao-i, the project is already underway and is expected to boost eco-tourism in the area.

Ngao-i emphasized that these initiatives are expected to further position Kalinga as a prime destination for heritage, culture, and sustainable tourism in the region, saying, “…all of these proposals will underline Kalinga’s identity as a destination for heritage, culture, and sustainable tourism—it is envisioned to showcase the province’s historical and cultural assets.”
