Paracelis, Mt. Province – With the surge of Chikungunya cases in Paracelis, a recommendation for said municipality to be declared a state of calamity is now being considered.

About 658 cases of chikungunya, a dengue-like viral infection, were recorded in the municipality from January to August this year, according to the Provincial Health Office of Mt. Province.

The data revealed that cases came from 8 out of 9 barangays in the municipality.

This prompted the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council of said town to make such a recommendation.

It was in 2013 that a chikungunya outbreak was also experienced in the area.

Accordingly, common signs and symptoms of the viral disease include fever, arthralgia (joint stiffness), and rashes. Symptoms are usually observed between four and seven days after an individual is bitten by the infected mosquito.

In an interview with PTV Cordillera, Paracelis Mayor Marcos Ayangwa revealed that the outbreak might have been caused by the practice of the people in the area, wherein they usually store water in containers during rainy seasons.

"Idtoy gamin Paracelis, ti tattao no panagtutudo, isu met ti panag-uurnong iti danum for their water supply, kaadwanna, ta awan pay ngamin usto nga water system ditoy. So gapu ta agur-urnong ti tattao iti danum ti tudo, dagiti containers, adu dagitoy pagurnongan ti danum, isu’t pagitlugan dagituy lamok," Ayangwa said.

To counter the increasing number of cases, the municipal government reactivated the ‘Epok Lamok’ program, wherein the destruction of mosquito breeding sites through spraying and cleaning is done every Wednesday morning.

The health department of the region also provided spray cans, insecticides, and chikungunya test kits to the said local government unit.
