Tabuk City, Kalinga – Some areas in the highland communities of Cordillera will soon benefit from the revival of heavy-duty tramlines in 2026.

According to the Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization, the tramlines are steel cable lines with carriers for hauling agricultural products. The tramline system is usually used in extremely rugged areas where point-to-point transport is needed.

Tramlines have long been aiding farmers in the Cordillera region since 1995. Additionally, it was in 1998 when the DA-CAR and the Bureau of Postharvest Research and Extension (BPRE) launched the first monocable tramline, which functioned both as track and traction cable for ferrying vegetables in Atok, Benguet.

While these tramlines have hugely helped the Cordillerans since the 90s, their usage has gradually declined over the past years due to technology. Thus, the effort to revive them will reduce travel time and transport costs for farmers to deliver their agricultural products from the mountains to the market.

As cited by the Department of Agriculture (DA), DA Assistant Secretary for Logistics Daniel Atayde confirmed that some areas in Baguio City, Buguias in Benguet, and Sadsadan in Bauko Mt. Province will be the initial beneficiaries of the said carriers
