3 Tinglayan schools receive STARBOOKS from DOST-Kalinga

Updated: Feb 27

Tinglayan, Kalinga – Learners of three schools in the municipality of Tinglayan will now have vast access to digitized science and technology resources and innovative materials that come in various formats with the awarding of three units of Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosks (STARBOOKS) in Tinglayan.

The awarding of the learning resources, amounting to P205,000, was held on Friday, February 23, at the Tinglayan LGU Sangguniang Bayan Hall.

Benefiting schools include Buscalan Elementary School, Dananao Elementary School, and Tulgao West Integrated School.

The acquisition of STARBOOKS was made possible with the inking of a memorandum of agreement by the Local Government Unit of Tinglayan and the Department of Science and Technology-Kalinga last year, implementing the project entitled "Advancing the Scientific and Technological Literacy Learners in Tinglayan, Kalinga as an Economic Development Strategy.”

Before the awarding, representatives of each school were oriented on the know-how of the learning resources by the DOST Kalinga team led by Science Specialists Karl Ian Martinez and Eliazar Tinio.

This is to ensure that the recipients will effectively utilize the given school resources.

In an interview, Martinez explained that the three recipients were selected because they belong to Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs).

He added that apart from STARBOOKS, the benefiting barangays shall likewise receive from their office the DOST-Food and Nutrition Research Institute's (FNRI) nutrition educator’s kit.

Mayor Sacrament Gumilab welcomed the development in the area and expressed gratitude to the agency for selecting three barangays within his jurisdiction as recipients.

He underscored that the learning resources given are beneficial not only to learners but also to the community since they would foster scientific and technological literacy that would further contribute to the locality’s development in the long run.
